The Aftermath of the Korean War
The war affected both countries--South Korea and North Korea--greatly. After the Korean War, North Korea became completely isolated. The country barred itself from every other country except China; the North Korean leaders still kept in contact with the Chinese leaders, but failed to maintain a steady relationship with other countries. During the years of tranquility between North and South Korea, the North Korean government has developed its country to view South Korea as the enemy by brainwashing and training the Koreans. As of today, it is clear that there are no or very little relations between the divided countries of Korea. At first, right after the war, North Korea was economically more advanced than Korea, but its tyrannical leaders failed to recognize reunification (as a whole). Thus, North Korea was only dependent on the Soviet Union and declined from then on, when both forces (North Korean and Soviet Union) fell apart after the Cold War. However, North Korea was able to maintain a communist economy, focus mostly on its military forces, and also develop its nuclear power forces; in other words, it is a threatening nuclear source that could, possibly, instigate a war one day. South Korea, on the other hand, continued to rise above the disaster and tragedies that occurred since the Korean War, which was called the "Han River Miracle." Over the years, South Korea managed to develop economically in so many ways, technologically, emotionally, etc. Although North Korea has held many South Korean hostages from the Korean War for several years, it recently agreed to hold a family reunion with South Korea this year (February). Today, the North Korean government has decided to resolve remaining issues, like the separated family issue, which will be met through family reunions.
What should be done to make peace with North Korea?
In order for peaceful unification to happen between the two Koreas, both should settle on negotiating and setting up a meeting to discuss the several ongoing issues between the the two countries. Also, a peace treaty should be made that there will no sudden violent attacks at each other at all times. Also, North and South Korean officials should discuss the different economies of both Koreas and try to settle for the more agreeable system, a capitalist democracy.
If one were in North Korea, what would one be doing?
If a person were to live or stay in Korea for whatever reason, the person be part of the propaganda-run country. In effect, the person would be brainwashed and living in the poor conditions of the other North Koreans living in North Korea. He/she would be living in a country that is highly strict and abuses human rights.
