학도병
학도병 is a term for young Korean students who participated early in the Korean War. There were many who freely volunteered to fight for their country, while others were forced to join the army. Of course, these students were not trained. They had no experience whatsoever with the equipment they were to use; most did not know how to shoot guns or even hold them. Several young students died from fighting in the Korean War.

A Letter Written for Mother

I killed a person.
I killed the person by throwing a grenade.

Mother
The enemy's leg and arms fell off.
Even if the person was the enemy, I felt uncomfortable and my heart felt heavy because we were both Korean.
Mother, why do we have wars?
My complicated and painful heart would only feel at ease if I told you about this.
I'm so scared.
My classmates and I can feel death nearing as we wait for the enemies to attack under the hot sun.
There are so many of them. There are only 71 of us.
I'm so scared because I don't know what will happen to me.
Yesterday I washed my undergarments myself.
But as I washed my clothes, I suddenly thought of the clothes worn by the dead.
I mean the clothes worn by the dead.
어머니
Mother
There is a chance that I might die today.
I don't think the enemies will give up.
어머니
Mother
It is not death that I am afraid of, but it is the fact that I might not be able to see you and my brothers again.
However, I am going to live.
I will live.
어머니
Mother
My heart feels at ease now.
어머니
Mother
I will live to meet you again.
I want to eat sangchussam.
I want to drink the cold water from the well.
Ah! The enemy is approaching now.
Bye mother!
Ah..It's not good-bye. I will write again..Then
